How to Burn Pure Beeswax Candles: The Complete Roadmap for Pillars, Tapers, Tea Lights & Votives
Learn exactly how to burn 100% pure beeswax candles the right way. Expert tips for 3" pillars, tapers, tea lights, and votives — no tunneling, clean burn, maximum glow from Busy Bees Candle Co.
Welcome to The Buzzfeed — your new favorite spot for all things pure beeswax!
Busy Bees is a small, family-run company hand-pouring every single 100% pure beeswax candle on our Northern California Homestead. No paraffin, no soy, no fragrances or dyes — just golden beeswax straight from the hives of American honeybees.
Because pure beeswax burns hotter and differently than other waxes, a few simple habits make all the difference between a perfect, even burn and a candle that tunnels or wastes wax.
This guide is your complete roadmap — whether you just bought your first Busy Bees pillar or you’re a longtime customer looking to get every last hour out of your candles.
Why Pure Beeswax Candles Are Worth the Extra Care
Pure beeswax burns cleaner and brighter than any other wax, produce almost zero soot, and releases a subtle, natural honey aroma. It also burns longer than soy and paraffin candles and gives off negative ions that help purify the air. But because it has a higher melting point, it needs the right burn time and wick care to perform at its best.
Ready? Let’s dive in.
1. Candle Safety: The Non-Negotiables
Before we talk technique, these rules always come first:
-
Never leave a burning candle unattended.
-
Keep away from children, pets, curtains, and anything flammable.
-
Burn on a stable, heat-resistant surface or proper holder.
-
Avoid burning in a draft (fans, open windows, vents, AC). Drafts cause dripping and uneven burning especially for exposed candles like tapers and pillars.
-
Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings and debris.

2. General Tips For Beeswax Candles
-
Trim Pillar or jar candle wick to appx ¼ inch (6 mm) before every single burn. This prevents mushrooming, soot, and a flame that’s too big. Generally, tea lights and tapers are self-trimming and do not need to be cut.
-
The first burn is the most important for pillars. Always burn until the wax pool reaches near the edge of the candle (this “memory burn” prevents tunneling forever after). Thin or small candles usually can handle much shorter burn times.
-
Burn in sessions of at least 1 hour per inch of diameter (more on this below).
-
Extinguish properly: Use a candle snuffer or dip the wick into the melted wax pool with a wick dipper, then use the end to pull it out of the melted wax and straighten it. If possible, avoid blowing it out— that is what creates excess smoke and splatter.
-
If the wick won’t light easily, hold the flame at the base of the wick for 5–10 seconds so the beeswax can absorb into it. Sometimes you may need to scrape some of the soft warm wax away or hold the candle on a slight angle to let some wax drip away from the wick if it’s struggling to catch.
PILLAR CANDLE TIPS
Our signature 3" pillars are designed for long, beautiful burns.
-
Minimum burn time: 3–5 hours per session (1–1.5 hours per inch of diameter).
-
Place on a pillar plate or heat-safe dish
-
Let the melt pool reach all the way to the edge on the first burn.
-
Hug the candle (gently press the softened walls inward toward the flame) once or twice during a long burn to help it burn evenly and create that gorgeous lantern glow.
-
It’s best to avoid burning for more than 5-6 hours at a time.
-
When only ½–1 inch of wax remains, stop using and repurpose for DIY projects or compost it in nature back to where it came from.
-
Pillars do not have a vessel, so they will not always burn evenly on all sides, remember to think of this type of candle as a unique piece of art, the edges will create peaks and valleys as it continues to shrink down.
Pro tip: If you notice early tunneling, give it one extra-long 5+ hour burn and hug the sides — it will usually correct itself.

TAPER CANDLE TIPS

Tapers are elegant and perfect for dinner tables or candelabras.
-
Always use a proper, secure taper holder.
-
Our tapers are self trimming and do not need to be cut.
-
Burn in a completely draft-free spot for the cleanest, with minimal dripping experience.
-
Shorter 1–2 hour burns are fine for tapers.
-
To secure a new taper: briefly melt the bottom in a flame and press firmly into the holder.
-
Extinguish with a snuffer (not blowing) to keep the tip neat for next time. Blowing out tapers or breaking the edges when snuffing is very likely to cause dripping the next session bc the welted max will spill out over the sides.
TEA LIGHT CANDLE TIPS

Our pure beeswax tea lights are made to burn in the container of your choice.
-
Always burn inside a well fitting tea light container, a vessel with too much space will cause it to just melt into a puddle.
-
No need to trim the wick before the first burn.
-
Burn for at least 1 hour or until the entire tea light is used (they usually last 3–5 hours total).
-
Tea light containers can get pretty hot, always place on a protective surface.
VOTIVE CANDLE TIPS

Votives are made to melt completely in a holder.
-
Use a tight-fitting votive holder (inside diameter about 1⅞"–2").
-
Optional trick: Put a few drops of water in the bottom of the holder before inserting the votive — makes cleanup easy later.
-
Burn for at least 1 hour per session until the wax pool reaches the sides.
-
Little to no wick trimming needed — beeswax votives self-trim nicely.
-
When less than ½ inch of wax remains, let it burn all the way out (it cannot be safely relit).
COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Tunneling → Caused by short burns. Fix with one long burn (3+ hours for pillars) and gentle hugging.
Soot or black smoke → Wick too long or draft present. Trim to ¼" and move to draft-free spot.
Flame keeps going out → Wick drowned or too much wax around it. Carefully pour off a little molten wax or gently dig out around the wick.
White “bloom” on the candle → Totally normal for pure beeswax! It’s a natural protective coating. Just buff it off with a soft cloth or hairdryer on low if you prefer the shiny look.

BEST STORAGE PRACTICES
-
Keep in a cool, dark place before first use.
-
Store upright in their original packaging or a closed box to prevent dust.
-
Pure beeswax never expires, but it will fade if kept in direct sunlight for long periods of time. Sunlight naturally bleaches things!
- Bloom (the white dust that forms on the outside) can easily be wiped off with your hands or a towel, it's a natural enzyme and leaving it there is just a personal preference.
